Emergency Evacuation Check-off List For Your Pet

horizontal rule

You've been tuning into the news for the latest hurricane updates. This time it's confirmed - the watch has been upgraded to a warning for your area. Your and your family begins preparing for evacuation to safer ground. Everything on your emergency list is packed in the car - everything except, maybe, your pet's survival kit. You never considered leaving your four-legged companion behind (and, indeed, shouldn't), but did you consider what you should have with you to care for your pet in an evacuation situation?

It is recommended that you pack a three-day supply of essentials for your family and, in most cases, this should also be the same for your pet. The following items should be kept packed in a special pet evacuation travel kit or be nearby for quick packing. If you have more than one pet, multiply their needs as necessary.

bullet

leash and collar with identification tags attached

bullet

rabies vaccination certificate

bullet

photocopy of AKC registration papers, if AKC registered

bullet

recent photo of your pet in case you are accidentally separated

bullet

complete shot records in the event you travel out of state or must board your pet

bullet

veterinarian's phone number

bullet

any special medications

bullet

pet first aid kit

bullet

your pet's normal food (& can opener, if needed)

bullet

plenty of water, either bottled or from your regular supply

bullet

food & water bowls

bullet

blanket & towels

bullet

crate

bullet

favorite toys

bullet

plastic "pick-up" bags

bullet

anything that you pet uniquely needs, which is not readily available

One important note to bear in mind is that some public shelters do not allow pets (even crated ones). It would be advisable to check with local emergency officials concerning this policy before a disaster strikes.

If your shelter does not allow pets, go through the telephone book looking for hotels/motels that are out of the storm's projected path and book a room. Leave in plenty of time to arrive safely with family and pets in tow!
