Maltese Health Issues

horizontal rule

The Maltese is basically a very healthy breed with few medical problems.

Some of the issues discussed will probably not be a problem for you, but will alert you for some things to watch out. With good care and regular veterinary check-ups you should expect your Maltese to live well into his teenage years.

Choosing a Veterinarian

horizontal rule

Perhaps one of the most significant things you can do to insure your Maltese a healthy life is select a good veterinarian.  Selecting a veterinarian that is right for you and your Maltese is not always easy.

Many things can help you determine who your veterinarian will be. Convenience and referrals from friends or your breeder may factor into your choice, but there are more technical criteria you may want to consider. Start by looking for a veterinarian who is associated with a hospital that provides the services you require.

Visit the veterinary office:

It should look and smell clean, and the staff should be well trained, courteous, and caring.

bullet

Are medical licenses to practice and hospital inspection certificates (from the American Animal Hospital Association or state veterinary association) displayed or available to you if you ask to see them?

bullet

Ask for a tour of the hospital when it is mutually convenient for you and the hospital staff.

bullet

Ask about the veterinarian's training and specialty areas if you are interested. You may someday be in need of a referral to a specialty hospital or an after-hours emergency hospital. Does your veterinarian refer or offer to refer your pet if the problem warrants?
